PSU Recruiting Teammates

Penn State has expressed interest in several players at Bishop McDevitt High School in Harrisburg, PA.

As long as college coaching staffs are traipsing through Bishop McDevitt to take a look at sensational quarterback Marcus Stone and coveted big-man C.J. Gruber, they should certainly check out the other talented Division I prospects playing for the Crusaders.

According to McDevitt Head Coach Jeff Weachter, both Vince Beamer and Jesse Pitt are "definitely Division I kids".

"They're definitely going to have offers," Weachter said.

Name: Vince Beamer
Position: WR/DB
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 180 pounds
40-yard dash: 4.44
School: Bishop McDevitt High School, Harrisburg, PA

Vince Beamer plays both wide-receiver and defensive back (safety) for McDevitt.

"Last year, he ran a 4.44, but we haven't timed him yet this year. He looks faster than that to me now.

"He can be a Division I receiver, but I think he can be a special defensive back. He covers well, but he really hits you. Pitt told me that their defensive staff was really excited about his highlight film.

"He had 3 interceptions and a bunch of tackles. We play a 4-3, but with our safeties, it's almost like a 9-man front. Our safeties get a lot of tackles.

"As a receiver, he probably caught about 25 balls and had 5 touchdown receptions."

Coach Weachter believes Vince will play on the defensive side of the ball in college.

"People I've talked to so far talk about him defensively because he has some real impressive hits on his highlight film."

Currently, Vince does not have any scholarship offers. His coach, who has a lot of experience with the recruiting process, believes that will soon change.

"Vince will probably get right around 20 offers.

"The teams interested in Vince are pretty much the same as [those interested in] C.J. Gruber, the Big East, the ACC and some Big 10 teams."

Coach Weachter indicated that Penn State is among the those interested in Beamer.

Vince attended a junior day at Maryland when the Terps played Duke in basketball.

Name: Jesse Pitt
Position: RB/LB
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 210 pounds
40-yard dash: 4.45
School: Bishop McDevitt High School, Harrisburg, PA

Jesse Pitt plays running back and linebacker for the Crusaders.

"He's just real athletic and a kid with good size.

"He was 1st Team All-Conference at running back. He's a running back, linebacker or a defensive back in college. He's 210, but he has a frame where he could be 230 and not lose any speed. He's slapped together real well."

"West Virginia, last April when they came through to look at Crummel, watched us have a little Spring workout and they loved him."

Offensively, Jesse improved as the season progressed.

"The first couple of games, Jesse was really just learning how to run the football. We play in a pretty tough league. The last 5 games, he really ripped it up. He averaged 170 yards the last 5 games as a tailback.

"Jesse will probably get 10 to 15 offers."

Pitt also attended the junior day at Maryland.

Name: David Collier
Position: WR
Height: 6'4"
Weight: 185 pounds
40-yard dash: 4.44
School: Bishop McDevitt High School, Harrisburg, PA

"We have another kid that has a shot," Coach Weachter said of David Collier.

"He's as fast as Vince Beamer but he's not as physical."

Collier plays wide-receiver for Bishop McDevitt.

"He impressed Penn State up at Penn State last year."

"I've been telling people that the other 4 kids (Stone, Gruber, Beamer and Pitt) are definitely Division I kids. This kid has Division I talent, but, to me, if he's going to make it in Division I he needs to show he's a little more physical. He can run though.

"He went up last year to a junior day [at Penn State] with Bryan Crummel."

Gruber is the only member of McDevitt's team to have attended a junior day at Penn State this year, but each of the prospects mentioned were part of the group of teammates that participated in the 7-on-7 camp at Penn State last June.  Coach Weachter plans to take the team back to State College again this summer for the 7-on-7 camp.

Weachter is not sure whether any of the McDevitt players will attend the Nike Camp at Penn State on April 21. However, the team will return to Penn State this summer for the 7-on-7 camp.

Vince, Jesse and David will be visiting the University of Pittsburgh today.

"I'm taking 6 or 7 kids out to Pitt on Thursday since we are off from school. They're having a junior day on April 6, but it's a Saturday, so I talked to them and we're just going to go out and take a look."
