Offers Rolling In For LB

Wes Jefferson of Gwynn Park High School in Maryland has already earned several scholarship offers. Has Penn State offered? Is he interested in the Nittany Lions?

Name: Wes Jefferson
Position: LB, RB, TE
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 231 pounds
40-yard dash: 4.8
Bench Press: 305 pounds
School: Gwynn Park High School, Brandywine, MD

Away from the football field, Wes Jefferson is a very nice, personable young man.  Opposing players, however, don't get to see that side of the Gwynn Park tackling machine.

"I like making people scared," Wes said when asked why he prefers to play defense.  "When I hit 'em, they get scared.  I hit as hard as possible.  I try to knock myself out."

As a junior, Wes had 163 tackles, 13 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries, 2 blocked punts and 2 touchdowns.

He also played some tight-end last season and will spend some time in the offensive backfield as well this year.

"I inflict pain on either side.  When I'm running the ball, catching it, going out for a pass, I'm always inflicting pain."

Wes helped the Yellow Jackets to a 9-2 record and garnered several post-season honors as a result of his defensive prowess.

"I was All-Met, Honorable Mention, I don't want to talk about that, consensus All-State, 1st Team All-County, 1st Team All-Gazette and Student Sports Junior All-American."

Jefferson did not have to wait until the May evaluation period for scholarship offers to start arriving at his home.

"I have seven offers: Penn State, Michigan State, Maryland, Virginia, Syracuse, Ohio
State and Temple.  I just got the one from Temple today.  That was the first time they ever sent me anything.  I frame them over the fireplace."

Several other schools are very interested in the middle linebacker.

"There's Florida State, Georgia Tech, Tennessee, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, North Carolina State, Michigan and a whole lot of others.

"I've been to Maryland's junior day (2/17), Penn State's junior day (3/23) and Virginia's junior day.

"Maryland is close to home, they're not far from here.  The crowd and the atmosphere (at the Maryland basketball game verses Duke) was great.  The fans are crazy.  There was a sea of red and white, there are some crazy fans there.  Virginia has a beautiful campus, it was real nice there.  Penn State, that was top of the line right there, top notch in everything, the weight room, the facilities, the program overall."

He will be taking a few more visits in the near future.

"I'll be going to Ohio State University and Florida State.  I've been to Michigan State before, I went to their camp last year."

Wes admitted to having a few early favorites.

"I have a couple of favorites: Ohio State, Maryland, Florida State and Penn State.  Those are my top 4."

Did he grow up liking a particular team?

"Texas and Penn State," he said.  "I liked Texas because of Ricky Williams.  I was a running back when I was a freshman.

"I liked Penn State because of LaVar Arrington.  He's around here sometimes.  He's at my school sometimes.  I think I play similarly to him, we both like to hit people."

Wes will attend the Blue-White game at Penn State on April 20 with his parents.  He will also participate in the Nike Camp the following day.

Jefferson does not plan to announce a final decision until the day before signing day next February.

"At first, I was looking to get away, then I was looking to stay close, but now that I've seen some things, I'm not sure.  We'll see how it works out."

As a sophomore, Wes played alongside linebackers Seth Mitchell (Michigan State) and Kellen Pruitt (Syracuse).

Wes also mentioned that teammate Anthony Vaughn is a legitimate prospect.

"He's pretty good, he can pick anything off, within 5 yards, it's his."
