CMU: Game Breakdown

The good, the bad and the ugly from Penn State's win over the Chippewas.

MAN OF THE HOUR: Linebacker Tim Shaw had the best game of his career, with 10 tackles, three stops for loss and a pair of sacks in three quarters. QB Michael Robinson and WR Deon Butler could have easily won this award, too.

TURNING POINT: Butler's two quick-strike touchdowns in the second quarter (54 and 24 yards) put the fork squarely in the Chippewas.

STRATA-GEM: With CMU facing 4th and 2 in PSU territory midway through the first quarter, safety Calvin Lowry blitzed and dropped bootlegging quarterback Kent Smith for a 14-yard loss. It set the tone for great pressure (eight sacks) by PSU all game.

NUMBERS GAME: CMU averaged .4 yards per carry. Ouch.

SURPRISE, SURPRISE: Eleven different Penn State players caught passes.

SPECIAL DELIVERY: Derrick Williams popped a 56-yard kickoff return that led to a Kevin Kelly field goal and 26-3 lead just before the break.

WHAT'S UP WITH: Lowry still returning punts?

HIT SQUAD: CMU safety Chris Curtis hammered Williams when Robinson was high on a third-quarter crossing pattern. Williams popped up like nothing happened. Tough player.

HEADS-UP: Up man Anthony Scirrotto, a true freshman, fielded a short second-quarter punt on the fly, saving key yards of field position. State responded with a drive that ended in a field goal for a 10-0 lead.

HIDDEN HERO: A tip of the cap to the entire first-team line, which kept Robinson safe.

LOST IN THE SHUFFLE: Lowry can't return punts. But he sure can play safety. He had eight stops and the big sack in this one.

  • That after considerable debate over whether suspended LB Dan Connor would or would not play in this game, he did not even dress? He was not on the sideline, either.

  • That center E.Z. Smith warmed up with the second-team offensive line but didn't get in the game. He was the first Lion off the field after the game, and the only one who did not shake hands with the scrappy Chippewas.

  • That Penn State's offensive line outweighed the CMU defensive line by 35 pounds per man? Any wonder Robinson had all day to throw?

  • That Penn State's second-team offensive line struggled tremendously when it got a chance in the fourth quarter?

  • That Justin King saw much more time at corner, with Anwar Phillips moving to nickel safety, in the second half.

  • That TB Rodney Kinlaw, who injured his knee in the preseason, saw his first action of the year? He carried once for four yards. DT Jimmy Shaw missed his second straight game with a knee injury.

  • That DT Jay Alford replaced snapper Pat Weber after the latter had a bad snap that cost the Lions an extra point?

UNANSWERED QUESTION: What happened to the Beaver Stadium turf, which was again coming up all over the place?
