Joe Kedra had an outstanding year for Camden Catholic, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Kedra plays offensive tackle out of necessity, but will play linebacker in college.
"He had 5 interceptions, 4 for touchdowns and 169 tackles," Camden Catholic Head Coach Dennis Scuderi said. "[The touchdown returns] were all over 40 yards. He has very good speed.
"He was All-South Jersey, 1st Team All-State (Associated Press) and he made All-Area. He's a big time player. Everybody I've talked to, everybody that saw his film said he's a big time player."
Kedra has attended Junior Days at Maryland, Rutgers and Penn State (February 16). He returned to Penn State this past weekend for the Blue-White game.
"It was sort of like a junior day," Joe said. "I guess there were about 40 of us and we just toured the school. They showed us their football building. Their facilities are the best I've seen."
The offers are starting to roll in for the Jersey defender.
"I have 5 actual scholarships and 2 verbal offers. Penn State, Rutgers, Maryland, North Carolina and Iowa have offered. The verbal offers are Boston College and Virginia. All I really have to do is go visit."
Joe currently plans to have a decision made by June or July, although that is subject to change.
Kedra may end up playing relatively close to home.
"I want to play close to home unless it's a big opportunity. By close to home, I mean the east coast, I don't want to go across the country."
Who are his favorites?
"I haven't seen North Carolina yet, so I want to go see there, but right now, the top 2 that I like the most, besides Boston College because I haven't been up there yet, are Penn State and North Carolina. I want to go see them (BC, UNC) and Virginia."
The North Carolina coaching staff is the reason UNC is in Kedra's top 2.
"I talked to the coaches and got a real good feeling. I liked the way they presented themselves. I think we're scheduled to go down there on Friday, May 10. I think it's for the day, but we might make it a weekend."
Penn State is obviously very interested in Kedra and the feeling is mutual.
"Coach Norwood is recruiting my area, but I talk to the linebacker coach a lot, Coach Vanderlinden. I talk to him the most probably.
"I like the facilities and the coaches are real down-to-earth. They'll tell you straight out how it is. They're not going to tell you 'you're going to come here and play'. They were just honest."
Joe has not yet attended an actual Penn State home game. He may attend a camp at PSU this summer.
"I'm going to go to one, but I'm not sure which yet. I have a lot that I'm thinking about. I'm thinking about Penn State."
Note: 2 of Kedra's teammates, Nick Cangelosi (QB, 6'4", 220 pounds) and Byron Williams (WR/DB, 6'3", 195 pounds), are also Division I prospects who have heard from Penn State.
