NY Safety Likes The Lions

Mike Meggett had a great showing at the recent Penn State Nike Camp. The Nittany Lions are among the many teams interested in the talented New Yorker.

Name: Mike Meggett
Position: S, WR
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 206 pounds
40-yard dash: 4.5
Bench Press: 275 pounds
School: Fort Hamilton High, Brooklyn, NY

Mike Meggett plays both wide-receiver and free safety for Fort Hamilton High School.

"I can play both," Mike said.  "My sophomore year, I won All-Borough as a receiver.  I was one of the best receivers in the city.  This year we ran the ball up and down the field, so they hardly threw the ball to me.

"I won All-City (1st Team) this year for defense, so that's what most schools are looking at me for.  I also won the 2001 School News Nationwide Rising Star Award.  That usually goes to the best underclassman in the city."

In addition, Mike was named 1st Team All-Borough again, this time as a defender.

Mike describes himself as "very aggressive".

"I see the field real well.  I play the run real hard and I play the pass even better.  I have a good eye for the ball.  I can play corner back, safety or linebacker."

Meggett played in 8 games this past season.

"I had 81 solo tackles, 103 assisted.  I had 4 interceptions, 4 forced fumbles, 3 fumble recoveries, 16 pass breakups and 9 tackles for a loss."

According to Mike, the Rutgers coaching staff previously told him during a visit to the school that they were going to be mailing him a scholarship offer.  However, things have apparently changed.

"I had an offer from Rutgers, but then they wrote my coach a letter this past Monday saying that I'm not offered.  I don't know where that came from.  I have the letter.  I'm just going to use that as motivation.""

Mike has received the most mail from Michigan State.

"My sophomore year, when I had that big year, they came down and were talking to my coach.  They told him that they wanted to offer me, but I haven't talked to any of the coaches face-to-face.  I'd have to say that I've received the most mail from them.  They want me to come to their camp.  They said that I should be seeing them in the next couple of days during May evaluation.  They told my coach last year that they're going to offer me, but I don't consider anything until I see it in my hands.

"I'm also hearing from Iowa, Penn State, Virginia, Boston College, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame, Syracuse, Temple, North Carolina and almost all of the Ivy League schools because I have good grades.  Hofstra told my coach that they're going to send me an offer."

So far, Mike has visited Rutgers and Penn State.  He took his first trip to State College last weekend to attend the Blue-White game on Saturday and the Nike Camp on Sunday.

"I plan on making a trip to Virginia maybe sometime in early June before I go to their camp just to check it out."

Meggett hopes to attend several camps this summer.

"I'm going to Virginia, Penn State and Michigan State and maybe Boston College or Northwestern's camp.  I'm definitely going to the Penn State and Michigan State camps."

The Nittany Lions are his early favorite.

"Right now, I'm really interested in Penn State.  If they were to offer me, I would take that.  Michigan State is definitely second.  After that, I'll just have to see after May."

Mike was impressed during his recent visit to Penn State.

"I went there and saw everything and I just loved the environment there.  It's a football town and I can just see myself fitting in well there."

Coach Brian Norwood is recruiting Mike.

"I talked to him a lot during the spring game.  He's called my coach a couple of times.  He's going to be coming here in May because in New York, they have this NFL program, high school player development, and most of the coaches that are recruiting me are going to be there.  It's during the week of May 13.  It's full equipment, so we hit and everything.  You can really see who's a player and who's not."

According to Mike, Penn State is recruiting him as a safety.

"I think they're real interested, but I just have to wait and see.  They told me that they really like me and that they want to see more of me, that's why they're going to come to that program.  And, I told them that I'm definitely going to their camp, so I'm hoping that everything goes well.  I really want to commit to a school before the season starts."

Meggett was pleased with his performance at the Nike Camp.

"I think I did real well as far as the drills went.  I was like one of the biggest guys there.  I was expecting one of those little guys to be flying right by me.  It gave me more confidence in my self because I was better than most of them there.  As far as the safeties go, I think I was the best there."
