Paterno Meets the Press

Joe Paterno met with the media Dec. 22 at the Delray Beach Marriott as the Nittany Lions continued preparations for the  FedEx Orange Bowl vs. Florida State on Jan. 3. Here are some of his comments:

On winning several Coach of the Year honors, including AP Coach of the Year earlier this week:

“It’s a great honor for the staff and squad. After last year I said if I can just keep my coaches together we’ll be OK. They’re the guys who have done a great job. It’s a misnomer, selecting a Coach of the Year. It should be the Staff of the Year.”

On playing in the Orange Bowl:

“It’s a great opportunity for us to feel like we belong. We want to play well against a very good Florida State team. Bobby’s a good friend. He’s a great coach and has a great staff. It should be a fun game. It’s still the Penn State football team playing the Florida State football team.”

On arriving early at the bowl destination:

“We’ve always come a little early. We come down three or four days early. It’s good because we can get the kids together without a lot of distractions. We’ll move to Miami on Saturday and the families will come in that day. I’ll let them [players] go for a couple of days and then we’ll get back to work.”

On practicing at Florida Atlantic University:

“Everyone at Florida Atlantic has been great. Howard’s [Schnellenberger] opened things up for us. He’s doing a great job there.”

His thoughts on the season:

“It has been a fun season. We have a bunch of kids who stuck together. It’s been fun to see them stay together and have some fun."
