Several Offers For Speedy Back

Seton Hall Prep running back Andre Callender has already been offered by several schools. His greatest asset is his tremendous speed. The Nittany Lions are, of course, very interested. (Photo courtesy of

Name: Andre Callender
Position: RB
Height: 6'0"
Weight: 185 pounds
40-yard dash: 4.3-4.4
School: Seton Hall Prep, West Orange, NJ

Andre was awarded 2nd team All-State in New Jersey by The Star Ledger after an impressive junior season last year.

"He started about half of the games as a sophomore and still had over a thousand yards," Seton Hall Head Coach Eric Gobble said when LionNews spoke with him in February.  "As a sophomore, he had 159 carries for 1,143 yards and 12 touchdowns. As a junior, he had 1,772 yards in 9 games for, I believe, 24 touchdowns. I'm pretty confident he averaged 9.7 yards per carry.

"He had 2 of the 5 top single game rushing performances in New Jersey. In one game, he had 14 carries for 356 yards and in another game he had 10 carries for 312 yards."

Coach Gobble plans to utilize Andre's abilities even more this season.

"This year, he'll play defensive back as well, but he hasn't yet."

Andre has already received several scholarship offers.

"Virginia, Penn State, Rutgers, Michigan State and a couple more have offered,"  Andre said.

Boston College and West Virginia are some of the others.  Andre also believes that Purdue gave him a verbal scholarship offer through his coach.

According to Andre, Penn State sent him a written offer about 2 weeks ago.  He has never been to Penn State.

He's been to junior days at Rutgers and Virginia this year.  He is unsure where he will attend camp this summer.

"Last year I went to Rutgers' camp.  This year I don't know.  I'm probably going to do the one-day camps and go to different schools."

Callender has received several calls from college coaching staffs during this May evaluation period.

"A couple of coaches called: Georgia, Maryland, Duke, Wake Forest, Virginia and Michigan State."

Andre did not really have a favorite college team growing up and does not claim any favorites at this time.

"I'm just going to wait until I get all of my offers in and decide from there."

He describes himself as "fast with good balance".  He won a 100m event last week at a conference with a time of 10.6 seconds.
