CT Defensive-End Names Top 3

Richard Kittrell of Hamden, CT is quickly becoming recognized as one of the best in the Northeast. He names his top three teams.

Name: Richard Kittrell
Position: DE
Height: 6'5"
Weight: 300 pounds
40-yard dash: 4.74
Bench Press: 340
School: Hyde Leadership School, Hamden, CT

As a junior, Richard amassed 170 tackles and 20 sacks, earning 1st Team All-State honors.

He played both tight-end and defensive-end for Hyde, but is being recruited to play on the defensive side of the ball.  Defensive-end is his preference.

Richard describes himself as "aggressive and quick off the ball".  Although he is obviously very strong, he considers himself as "more of a finesse player."

It didn't take long for opponents to figure out that the best way to handle Kittrell was to try to avoid him.

"By the third game, they ran to the opposite side, but I'm fast enough to get to the opposite side," Richard said.

Kittrell listed the following teams as having offered him a scholarship: Rutgers, Maryland, Michigan State, Michigan, Iowa, USC, Penn State, Indiana, Temple, Syracuse and UConn.

"I'm getting one soon from Miami," he added.  "I'm not sure about UNC, but my coach says that they've offered. That's all I know, but my coach knows all that information."

Rich named 3 teams as early favorites.

"I like Maryland, but I wouldn't sign right now because I'm making my decision in January.  I like the coaching staff, they click, I like them. I also like Michigan State and Iowa.  Those are my top 3 so far.  The O-Line coach [at MSU] was one of my coach's coaches at Southern Connecticut University.  My coach said he was a good guy, someone he could trust and so forth.  I got a good vibe from him myself.  Coach O'Keefe (Iowa) is from around this area and seems like a nice guy."

Distance to a prospective school will not be a major factor for Richard in making his final decision.

So far, Kittrell has only visited UConn and Rutgers.

"I'm going to a junior day this Sunday at Maryland."

According to Kittrell, Penn State Coach Brian Norwood visited his school, but the two have not yet had the opportunity to share more than a few words.  Richard has been unavailable many evenings due to track commitments (shot put and discus).

Does the big defensive lineman have an interest in Penn State?

"Yeah, I have interest in basically all of the schools."

Kittrell is keeping an open mind right now and plans to take his official visits.
