PSU High on Detroit Star

It took one camp performance and the Penn State staff was sold. Joseph Barksdale, the 6-foot-5, 300-pound defensive tackle prospect from Cass Technical High in Detroit received an offer in person from the PSU staff last week in Columbus, Ohio.

Penn State offered me on the spot at the [Ohio State] Nike Camp,” Joseph Barksdale said. “Coach [Larry] Johnson offered me as he was standing next to my coach.”

Penn State is one of many elite schools to come in and offer Barksdale, who is being recruited by everyone as a defensive tackle. Other schools that have extended Barksdale an offer include Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Miami and Tennessee.

So what does Barksdale think of Penn State?

“They're one of the top five teams in the country,” Barksdale said. “I really like Penn State. I mean, I'm open to everyone, but I really like Penn State. I know they had a breakout season last year and I feel like they're going to continue to progress and be the powerhouse that everyone knows that they are.”

Currently, Barksdale says he wants to take a tour of many of the schools he is interested in and then will narrow his choices. As of now, Penn State will be getting a visit.

“Right now I'm trying to put together a list of schools during the summer and Penn State is definitely one of those,” Barksdale said.

While trips to schools are in the near future a commitment is not.

“I plan to commit after the season because I don't plan on committing until after I take my official visits,” Barksdale said. “I plan to have a top 10 [list of schools] out of summer camp.”

As for his style of play, Barksdale said he has been compared to one of the all-time great defensive linemen.

“My coach says I play a lot like Reggie White,” Barksdale said. “I use a lot of aggression and finesse. I'm real quick off the ball.”
