Austin Talks Strategy and Timing

With over 30 offers from around the country, Scout five-star defensive tackle Marvin Austin discusses his strategy and timing to assess and narrow his list of favorites. It could prove to be a busy summer for the 6-foot-3, 300 pound lineman.

"I've decided not to do anything until after the school year," said Scout.com five-star defensive tackle Marvin Austin from Washington, D.C. "I'm not planning any visits until this summer. That's when I'll pick my favorites. I want to go somewhere that will make me a better person and athlete. It could be a powerhouse or an up-and-coming program..."

Miami is the latest school to throw their hat into the ring for superb Washington, D.C. defensive tackle Marvin Austin (6-foot-3, 300, 4.9). The 'Canes offered the Scout.com five-star recruit earlier this week. He denies any favorites.

"I've been waiting for Miami to offer me for a while," said Austin, of Coolidge High School. "I was really surprised they hadn't offered before since their style of defense is right up my alley. Then I got it last Monday. I've been talking to the Miami coaches for a while. They told me they knew they'd been slow in offering because all of the coaching changes last year. I understand why they came in so late. I'm not holding that against them at all."

Austin said, with over 30 offers, he is not ready to narrow things down. "I've decided not to do anything until after the school year. I'm not planning any visits until this summer. That's when I'll pick my favorites. I want to go somewhere that will make me a better person and athlete. It could be a powerhouse or an up-and-coming program; I'm not looking at all that right now. My ultimate goal is to go to a college that has a good graduation rate…where I can see myself at for the next four years."

Maryland, Penn State, Notre Dame, Oregon, USC, Tennessee, Georgia, Michigan State, Florida, North Carolina State, Indiana, Virginia and Florida State are a few of the schools courting Austin.

"Out of all the schools, I think Florida State, USC, Notre Dame and Maryland are recruiting me the hardest. They all pretty much are doing the same things. I get text messages, letters, phone calls; you name it, from them every day. I talk to the coaches all the time. They all show up to see me whenever I'm playing somewhere. Right now, there's no one standing out. I have 30 or more favorites right now. They are all great programs with great coaches…I'm going to have a lot to think about.

"I'm going to try to get to as many schools as I can this summer," Austin said. "I'm taking this summer to familiarize myself with the different programs and pick out the ones that I think are best for me. Until then, I'm trying not to get too wrapped up in it all."

Final junior stats: 80 tackles/12 for loss/eight sacks/five forced fumbles. "I just have a lot of athletic ability for my size. I'm really quick and powerful."
