Powell Jumps on Penn State Offer

The Nittany Lions have added commitment number six to their list Saturday. Glen Rock, Pa., running back/defensive back Chaz Powell picked Penn State. Powell was one of two players to commit to PSU over the weekend.

He wasted little time joining State's Class of 2007 once he received an offer.

“They had to present my academic situation to a committee and they approved offering me a full scholarship,” Chaz Powell said. “I found out last Sunday that they would be offering me and I got the written letter in the mail Saturday so I called Coach Larry Johnson and committed. He then put me in touch with Coach [Joe] Paterno and I told him. They were both really excited.”

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound Powell had offers from Maryland, Boston College, UConn, Georgia and Temple in addition to the Penn State offer.

Now that Powell has made his decision, he knows what comes next.

“Now I plan on focusing on my senior year of high school and I want to get my GPA up and all that,” Powell said. “I am really excited about this commitment and I want to do my best to help the team in any way.”

Powell had been told that his position in Happy Valley would be determined upon his arrival but that has been narrowed down somewhat. “The coaches told me that I will be playing defense for Penn State,” Powell said. “I will most likely play cornerback or safety.”

It is all over except for a few visits for Powell in regard to his recruitment.

“Coach Paterno said that he is going to come visit my high school as soon as he is allowed to do so by NCAA rules.” After that, Powell plans on making a few trips to Happy Valley himself to do his part in recruiting. “I will have to talk to the coaches, but I am definitely going to come up for the Michigan game and probably one other game,” Powell said.
