When LionNews recently spoke with John Rochford, he indicated that he had 3 favorites, Miami, Penn State and Iowa and that he had no leader. Recently, it has been reported that Miami holds a slight lead. In an effort to verify this, LionNews spoke with the father of John Rochford Wednesday evening.
Does John favor Miami?
"They were the first one that offered him," his father answered, "so they are kind of the leader I guess, but he likes Penn State a lot. He likes the facilities and he likes Brian Norwood and Larry Johnson."
John's father has spoken frequently with the different coaching staffs that have offered his son a scholarship. So far, those schools include Penn State, Miami, Wisconsin, Iowa and Temple.
"That's it right now, Virginia, Maryland, Syracuse, Rutgers, Florida and North Carolina are sitting on the fence. I think they're waiting for the season to start, that's kind of what they told us."
The Rochfords hope to attend Penn State's recruiting day tomorrow.
"We're scheduled to go except my father has an illness so we're not sure. More than likely, we're going to head up there although John's been there three times. He was at their first junior day, he was at their Blue-White game and we were at football camp there last summer."
Is Penn State recruiting John to play nose tackle?
"He can play either way. That's what makes him attractive. He can play nose tackle or he can play guard or center and he's an excellent long snapper.
"Penn State's not out of the loop. They have excellent facilities, a nice place and it's a little bit closer to my house than Miami."
Other than the Blue-White game this year, John and his father have not yet attended a game at Penn State. They do not yet have tickets to a game this season.
"I'm sure I'll talk to them Saturday about that."
