Nittany Notes: Injury Report

With Penn State preparing to head to Minnesota for a clash with the Golden Gophers, the Nittany Lions are dealing with injuries to a variety of players. Get an updated report on PSU's injury situation.

Penn State football has had its share of injuries this season. Here is the latest on the Nittany Lions' injury situation heading into the clash with Minnesota Saturday:

Kevin Kelly: As we first reported late last week, Penn State kicker Kevin Kelly is dealing with a stress fracture. It turns out the fracture is to the iliac crest (see illustration). This injury has limited Kelly's practice reps and was part of the reason he did not handle the kickoff duties against Northwestern. "Kickoffs typically require more power and leg extension, which can add stress to his injury. Kevin is recovering and should be fine, but his kickoff duties are likely to be suspended for the time being to help him recover," one observer said. As an aside Kelly spoke with FOS after the Northwestern game about the injury.

Jim Shaw: Defensive end Jim Shaw sustained a high ankle sprain early in the season. However he has also been dealing with an injury to his left knee. Shaw recently had his knee scoped and is recovering. "It will likely be a few more weeks until he is ready to get back into action," according to an observer. He's listed as questionable for Minnesota.

Terrell Golden: Golden, a wide receiver, was dealing with an ankle injury, but has been practicing since last week and saw action in the tail end of Saturday's game.

Levi Brown: The starting left tackle sustained a minor knee sprain in practice drills last week. "He could have played" according to observers, but the coaching staff elected to keep him out of action to aid his recovery. The medical staff has been limiting his practice time this week and he is likely not to see action against Minnesota. Joe Paterno has said Brown will skip this week's game. If Brown can't go, Chris Auletta will make his second straight start at left tackle.

Jerome Hayes: The linebacker is still seeing practice limitations due to a foot injury, although he is said to be progressing with his recovery. "They'll get him some light work this week depending on how he feels and what the medical staff says," one observer shared.

Robert Price: Price, PSU starting right guard, is questionable for Minnesota with a recently sustained shoulder injury. Gerald Cadogan is expected to start in his place.
