Ryan plays linebacker and some tight-end for Berkeley, but he is being recruited to play inside linebacker in college. TheInsiders recruiting gurus currently award him 4 out of 5 stars and rank him as the 25th best linebacker in the country.
"I think I have good quickness and great lateral movement," Ryan said Thursday night. "I can play from sideline to sideline. I'm a big play person, that's me.
"I only played 6 games last year. I had 74 tackles, 2 sacks, 3 caused fumbles and 2 fumble recoveries.
"I broke my ankle after the 4th game. I got surgery and came back for the last 2 games. I was out 6 weeks. It's fine now. I broke it my sophomore year and this year in practice, I twisted my ankle and it broke in the same place. The doctor said it wasn't fully healed, so this time he put screws in it.
"I have 11 offers right now: South Carolina, Clemson, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Maryland, Penn State, Tennessee, Florida, Wake Forest, Georgia and South Carolina State.
"I think Ohio State is about to offer me soon. They write me about every day, but I guess they're just waiting until September 1st to call."
Ryan likes several teams right now and is not concerned about distance to a prospective school.
"I like a lot of them. I like Penn State, South Carolina, Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina State and North Carolina. I like Ohio State and Nebraska, but I haven't heard from them yet.
"I went to the one-day camp at South Carolina and I went to Clemson on an unofficial visit. Those are the only 2 schools I've visited."
Ryan plans to take some official visits before making his final decision. He only has one more unofficial visit scheduled right now, to Penn State next month.
"Joe Paterno is a great coach, one of the best. They have a great winning tradition and from what I've seen and known, a lot of players who go there go straight to the NFL. Penn State is known for linebackers, they call it Linebacker U, so that's why I like them.
"My cousin, Kinta Palmer, is a wide receiver there and he talks to me about them all the time. The coach called me one day and said they offered me. I know I'm going up there on September 14 to see them play Nebraska.
"It's an unofficial visit. I just want to see them play. I'm going up with his (Kinta's) parents."
Has Penn State given him a scholarship offer in writing?
"They probably did. There's a bunch of their letters in there. But, I know they have [offered]. Kinta and their recruiting coaches told me that they have offered me already."
He and Palmer are close.
"Yeah we're close. I saw him today (Thursday), he came to our football practice. He calls me all the time."
