DeChellis Chimes in on Amaechi

In this FOS Audio File, the PSU coach talks about the former Nittany Lions' much-publicized decision to reveal he is gay. Amaechi is the first NBA player, active or retired, to go on record as being gay.

Former Penn State basketball standout John Amaechi is making national headlines for a book he is about to release. In “Man in the Middle,” Amaechi reveals he is gay. He is the first NBA player, retired or active, to say he is gay.

Amaechi transferred to Penn State from Vanderbilt in 1992. At the time, he was recruited to Happy Valley by then-Nittany Lion assistant Ed DeChellis, who is now the head coach at PSU.

Amaechi scored 1,310 points and had 745 rebounds in his three seasons in Happy Valley. He won first-team All-Big Ten honors in 1995, and was a first-team Academic All-American in 1994 and 1995.

Following the Nittany Lions' 71-58 loss to Wisconsin at the Jordan Center Wednesday, DeChellis was asked about Amaechi's decision to reveal his sexual preference. Hear what the coach had to say about Amaechi in the FOS audio file below.
