PSU Recruiting Roundup

Members of the Penn State coaching staff are on the road currently around the country continuing their recruiting efforts for the Class of 2008. Here are some updated news and notes around the Nittany Lions' recruiting efforts and travel, including updates on Michael Zordich, Sam McGuffie, Brice Butler, Darrell Scott and Jonas Gray.

Michael Zordich: The Ohio linebacker has "officially" narrowed his schools down to a final two of Penn State and Ohio State. He said that he has already been to both schools a lot and understands what both have to offer, so he feels like he has a grasp on things.

His plans are to get back to both schools as much as he can in the coming months and to hopefully make a decision sometime before his season starts.

Zordich will not be attending the Nike Camp this weekend at Penn State, and has no plans set yet for future visits to either Penn State or Ohio State.

Sam McGuffie: The Texas running back indicated Coach Brian Norwood was down visiting his school earlier this week to talk with his coach. Norwood told McGuffie's coach that they got his film and were looking at it and that a PSU offer would be in the mail shortly.

Just in this past week McGuffie's school has hosted coaches from Ohio State, LSU, Florida, Notre Dame, USC, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma state in addition to Penn State. In fact, Coach Pete Carroll and Coach Charlie Weis were even down to his school in person this week.

McGuffie has not narrowed his schools down at all with all the offers coming in. He has no timetable for doing so either. He will start taking some visits this summer and will definitely consider visiting Penn State.

Brice Butler: Penn State coach Mike McQueary was in attendance for the Georgia wideout's spring practice yesterday along with coaches from USC, LSU and Clemson, among others. The coaches are not permitted to speak with the players on these visits, but Butler did say that he will be narrowing his list down to 5-10 schools sometime this coming June.

Darrell Scott: Considered the running back recruit in the country, California prosepct Darrell Scott indicated that Penn State has not been in contact with him. Oddly enough though, when I mentioned Penn State he laughed and said he "know(s) all about Happy Valley." He is very interested in Penn State if they would start to recruit him.

The number one thing that he is looking at are depth charts and getting on the field right away. Obviously, Penn State has that to offer. Could Penn State get him? Hard to say since he is from the other side of the country. Scott is from Florida originally though, so he has been an east coast guy in the past. His top 11 right now include LSU, UCLA, Cal, USC, Texas, Notre Dame, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Colorado, and Michigan.

He did say that he was wide open and would consider anyone else who offers. Stay tuned, maybe the PSU staff will throw its hat in the ring yet for the nation's top back.

Jonas Gray: I finally got back in to contact with Jonas to talk a little bit about Penn State. He indicated that he hopes to make it to Penn State, Ohio State, and Michigan for camps this summer to try to show what he can do in person. At this point, Penn State has not been in contact with Jonas or any of his coaches.

He indicated that he has emailed his tape to both Coach Larry Johnson and Coach Ron Vanderlinden, but has not heard back from them. He also sent his tape from last year in to Penn State at the conclusion of his season.

Gray seems very interested in Penn State. He wants to go somewhere with a favorable depth chart at running back so that he can make an immediate impact. One thing that was of interest from our conversation is that Gray really wants to commit with enough time to make an impact on the recruiting of the school that he chooses. He is pretty tight with Arizona WR Gerrell Robinson and has a teammate Kenny Demens that are both getting a lot of offers. He has talked with Robinson frequently about going to school together and they are really looking at Minnesota pretty hard.

Gray indicated that he may change his mind about camping at Penn State, Ohio State, and Michigan and make a decision early. It is not something that he necessarily wants to do, but if he feels good about a school and doesn't get the vibe that the others that he wants offers from are interested, he could make an early commitment.
