ScoutTV: 'Back' in Action

Asheville (A.C. Reynolds), North Carolina tailback Darius Spencer has been getting more and more attention recently from a variety of programs. Catch up with the versatile running back's recruitment and see his abilities in action.

Coming off a strong junior season, Darius Spencer rushed for over 1,300 yards and 18 touchdowns to earn all-conference honors this past season. He also was a standout at cornerback, and he is being recruited as an athlete by most programs due to his varsatility on the football field.

Spencer has already picked up a couple of offers and is attracting attention from a host of suitors.

"NC State and ECU have offered me," he said. "Penn State is on me, and so is Clemson, Florida State, and Virginia Tech."

At 5-foot-10 and 180 pounds he is one of North Carolina's top athletes. At the Asheville Shrine Bowl Combine, Spencer ripped off 4.33 and 4.32 runs in the 40-yard dash. He added a 37-inch vertical, a 4.27-second 20-yard shuttle on a gym floor, and 18 repetitions of 185 pounds.

At this past weekend's combine, Spencer ran a 4.37 forty yard dash and a his a 39.1 inch vertical jump.

He is expected to have a huge season for A.C. Reynolds, and Spencer's recruitment should take off in the next few weeks. The Pirates are currently the leader for Spencer.

According to A.C. Reynolds Assistant Coach Larry Brow, "I think Darius is more of a running back, and you'll see that on the tape. He can really run with the football. If he works hard, I think by his sophomore year he'll be close to 200 pounds.

"You'll see. With his speed at 4.35 and his size, he can carry it for us and I think he could be a back on that level."

As recruiting analyst Steve Williams said of Spencer's abilities, "Some players post great combine numbers but that talent never seems to translate proportionally to the football field. Darius Spencer isn't one of those players. If anything, he appears to be even faster.

"What is most impressive are the number of long runs where he runs through an entire defense without ever being touched. He creates almost impossible pursuit angles for opposing defenses due to his incredible burst and top end speed.

"Spencer has the size to certainly play running back on the next level but his speed and athleticism make him a candidate to star at almost every position where speed is a prerequisite. On film, he is one of the most impressive players in North Carolina."
