Temple: Report Card

Grading the Nittany Lions after they moved to 8-3 on the season with a win at Temple.

PHILADELPHIA — Who made the grade and who failed miserably in Penn State's 31-0 shutdown of Temple here Saturday?

OK, so we don't really light up anyone this week (not even the Owls). After a ho-hum game, it seemed to make sense to offer some ho-hum grades.

OVERALL: It may not have been pretty. But it is difficult to be too critical of a 31-0 win over anyone.
Grade: B-

OFFENSE: Did what it needed to do. Another strong effort by Rodney Kinlaw and the receivers were on the ball. Anthony Morelli generally played well, but those turnovers are a concern.
Grade: B-

DEFENSE: This unit came out flat to start the game and caught a few breaks with the Temple mistakes. But again, difficult to turn your nose up at a shutout of anyone.
Grade: B-

SPECIAL TEAMS: Uneventful day overall, which is good news considering the kickoff return coverage theatrics the Lions have had of late. Nothing great in this one. Nothing really bad, either.
Grade: B-

COACHING: The staff seemed to get a little too cute with a pass-heavy series in the third quarter. But someone in the press box suggested it may have been trying to save Kinlaw's legs, and with Evan Royster out with an injury had to get creative. We're not sure we buy that.
Grade: B-

INTANGIBLES: When playing Temple in football, the intangibles are ALWAYS on your side.
Grade: B-

OTHER GUY: The Owls were overmatched, but we give them credit for playing with heart and never rolling over. That may sound like faint praise, but it seriously is a step in the right direction.
Grade: B-

OFFICIALS: It was good not to have the zebras take over the game as they did a week earlier. But did the referee really have to scream on the PA system every time there was a “TV TIMEOUT!?”
Grade: B-

CROWD: It says something when a team can draw nearly 70,000 on the road. We'd take away points for the late arrival of many fans, but having seen the ridiculous traffic situation coming in, they get a pass. Has this area every played host to a major sporting event before?
Grade: B-
