National Champs Again

The Penn State women's volleyball team won its second national title on Saturday evening, beating top ranked Stanford to win a title many thought was improbable for PSU.

The Nittany Lions, seeded third, pulled away in the fifth game on key kills by Christa Harmotto and Nicole Fawcett to win 30-25, 30-26, 23-30, 19-30, 15-8.

Penn State (34-2) had 25 kills from Megan Hodge and 19 by Fawcett to win their second national title since 1999. Freshman Arielle Wilson had 12 kills and only two errors for a .500 hitting percentage in the match. Hodge was voted the most outstanding player of the final four.

PSU came out strong taking the first two games, but Stanford (32-3) made a dramatic comeback by taking the third and fourth games, the first two games lost by Penn State in the tournament.

The title capped off a sweet season for head coach Russ Rose who was selected as the 2007 AVCA Division I National Coach of the Year.

This was the third time Penn State and Stanford have met in the finals, with Stanford winning in 1997 and PSU winning in 1999.
