FOS Recruiting Report

FOS Recruiting Analyst Cory James provides an update on some high priority targets for the class of 2008, including Kevin Newsome, Brandon Wegher, Eric Shrive and Craig Crawford.

Brandon Wegher: Wegher, who was on PSU's campus yesterday for an unofficial visit, flew in to State College on Monday and spent about five hours on campus getting shown around by PSU Recruiting Coordinator Mike McQueary, talking with coaches and academic advisors and getting a feel for the program. Brandon and his father were also able to sit down with Coach Joe Paterno for about a half hour and talk about life, football and school, among other topics.

At the end of the visit, Penn State told Brandon that an offer would be sent out tomorrow for him. Penn State offered Brandon as a multi-dimensional athlete with the belief that he could play running back, slot wideout, corner or safety at Penn State. Penn State told Brandon that he could see the field earliest probably at running back or in the slot, which Brandon prefers.

Wegher really enjoyed his visit to Penn State, but he will be taking more unofficials this spring and summer including a trip to Kansas for a Junior Day this coming weekend. Wegher is hoping to make his decision a little bit before the start of his senior season or a few games in, depending on when he is ready to commit.

Craig Crawford: The West Virginia prospect said there is a lot of Penn State interest in him currently. Crawford said he has grown up a "big" PSU fan since his brother always liked them. He is really hoping to get a PSU offer and will try to make it up for one of the two Junior Days at PSU.

Crawford said there is one PSU Junior Day on March 1 and a second one on April 5. Crawford plays basketball so if he is done with that by March 1 he will be up for that one, if not, he will be up for the April 5 session. Crawford also said that he will definitely be at the May 10th Nike Camp at PSU this year. Crawford also said that he "hopes" Penn State gets Terrelle Pryor. Kind of a weird statement from a QB that would play behind him, however, Crawford has been recruited as a QB, WR, and DB and it doesn't matter to him which position that he plays.

Eric Shrive: Shrive recently unofficially visited Rutgers and said the trip was a "good time." He is headed to Notre Dame in two weeks for a Junior Day in South Bend.

Shrive also says he is planning on heading to Happy Valley this spring to take in a practice and get a closer look at the program and school.

Kevin Newsome: Newsome said that he was happy with his performance at the Army All American Combine this past January; there he ran a 4.6/40 (which was not his best time) and also posted a 35" vertical.

Newsome commented that he hears from everyone that he is already committed to Virginia Tech, but he said "that couldn't be further from the truth." Newsome said that he is just taking the whole process in right now and is honored to have the offers that he has thus far. He indicated that Maryland was on the verge of offering him and he already holds written offers from UConn, WVU, PSU, UNC, Virginia Tech, Northwestern, and Stanford.

Newsome said that he is open to competition wherever he goes so he is not worried about who is going to the schools that he has offers from. When specifically asked about Terrelle Pryor considering Penn State he said, " Well, Terrelle Pryor is the one guy that I would have a hard time going to compete with. He is at his own other level." Newsome went on to add that he thought Pryor would head to Michigan anyways so he did not think that would have an impact on him.

Newsome said that he talks with Philadelphia wide receiver Je'Ron Stokes a lot, saying, "Je'Ron Stokes and I are real close, he is one of my good friends. We met up at Penn State and exchanged numbers. I just talked to him last week actually." Newsome also said that he is good friends with Logan Heastie, the WR from VA.

Wjen asked about the rumors of him transferring high schools next year he said, "I plea the fifth," Newsome said. Obviously, Newsome didn't want to talk about it, which one would only assumes that could mean a transfer is in the works.

Newsome also said that Georgia has been recruiting him pretty hard and was up at his school. However, they want him as a defensive back, which Newsome has no interest in playing. That should give you an idea of the kind of athlete Newsome is though.
