Newsome Ready to Hit Road

Penn State among spring destinations for standout quarterback from Virginia. Learn who is recruiting him with the most vigor and when he might make up his mind.

Chesapeake, Va., quarterback Kevin Newsome has a long list of colleges from which to choose. He has already picked up offers from Penn State, Boston College, Tennessee, Michigan, Virginia Tech, Kentucky, Illinois, Stanford, Northwestern and Nebraska.

Newsome has not narrowed his list at all and said he is considering all suitors. But he will be taking a closer look at some schools during spring practice.

“I will be visiting Boston College, Michigan, Illinois, Kentucky and Penn State this spring for unofficial visits,” Newsome said. “Hopefully I can get to all of them during their spring practices or their spring game to see a little bit of the team.”

So who is showing the most interest?

“Michigan is probably coming after me the hardest right now,” Newsome said. “I can't walk anywhere in my house without seeing some letter from Michigan or something. South Florida, Northwestern, and Penn State are also recruiting me the hardest after Michigan.”

He hopes to be narrowing things down in the coming months.

“I am still trying to decide what I want to do,” Newsome said. “On one hand, I would like to commit early in August or September so I can help get some talent in the recruiting class wherever I choose to go. On the other hand, I have always thought about announcing during the Army All-American game if I am selected to play in it. Right now, I am focusing on learning more about all of the schools, then I will be narrowing things down and when I am ready I can decide when I want to announce.”

Newsome has had a lot of contact with coaches through letters and e-mails. He is of the opinion that the school itself and the academics are what is most important.

“I know coaches move around in college football, but the school and the academics stay the same,” Newsome said. “I talk to all of the coaches and they are all really nice -- of course they are, they want me to come to their school. I know that they are all really good coaches, and if there is a coaching change the next coach will also be a really good coach. It is the school that is something that won't change, and that is where you will be at no matter what.”

Look for more from Newsome in the coming weeks as he takes in some spring practices and possibly narrows things down in the near future.
