VA Prospects Eyeing State

These Virginia prospects are being recruited by several teams including Penn State. How interested is the Nittany Lion coaching staff? How interested is the Virginia pair in Penn State?

Name: Ervin Battle
Position: RB, LB
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 227 pounds
40-yard dash: 4.5
School: Huguenot HS, Richmond, VA

Ervin plays both fullback and linebacker for Huguenot High School.  According to his head coach, Richard McFee, Battle is being recruited to play tailback at the college level.

"He has 96 carries for 986 yards and 10 touchdowns," McFee said last Thursday evening.  At that time, Huguenot was 7-2.  "He has 15 receptions for 281 yards."

Is he starting to narrow things down with regard to the recruiting process?

"Not really, we're just trying to get to the state playoffs.  Right now, he's getting feelers from Penn State, Michigan, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Alabama, Tennessee.

"Penn State, Michigan and Virginia Tech seem to be the most interested."

Per McFee, Ervin does not yet have any scholarship offers.

Although Battle did not have any official visits set up as of last Thursday, he has already taken unofficial visits to Penn State and Michigan.

Name: Carlin Gibson
Position: DB
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 175 pounds
40-yard dash: 4.4
School: Huguenot HS, Richmond, VA

"He's played both [cornerback and safety]," McFee said of Ervin Battle's teammate, Carlin Gibson.  "This year he's playing corner.

"He has 10 interceptions and about 46 tackles.  He runs back punts and kickoffs, but I just can't remember his numbers there.

"Last year, he was our leading rusher (wingback).  This year, he hasn't even touched the ball on offense.

"Penn State is recruiting him as a corner.  Michigan is recruiting him as a corner.  Tennessee has offered him as a free safety."

According to Coach McFee, Tennessee is Gibson's only offer at the moment.  That, however, does not mean that Tennessee is his favorite.

"He's really just waiting."

The Nittany Lions appear to be very interested in the Virginia prospect.

"Penn State only has 14 scholarships this year.  When I talked with Coach Paterno, he said he's on their list.  It's just a matter of them deciding who they're going to offer those 14 scholarships to.  He's on their list.  I know that for a fact."

Like Battle, Gibson does not yet have any official visits scheduled.
