Penn State offered me last week, Smith said. I got my summer school grades in and Coach Larry Johnson from Penn State called my coach to talk about me. After they talked, Coach Johnson said that he would be sending an offer to me. The offer got faxed to the school that week and I just got it in the mail over the weekend.
Smith has been hoping for a Penn State offer for a while, but he will still take his time in making a decision.
I talked with my coach and we decided that I should take some visits to see what is best for me this fall, Smith said. I will be going to Penn State for their game against Oregon State and I am going to set up visits to Temple and Akron so I can see what they have to offer. After those visits, I may visit some schools that have offered me in track somewhere around December. I love football and I love track, so I would love to do both in college, but we will have to see if that works out.
Smith has some former teammates from Eleanor Roosevelt High that have verbally committed to Penn State, but he does not intend for that to have an impact on his decision.
I would love to go to school with my best friends, but that is not going to be what I base my decision on, Smith said. I have to go wherever is best for me and my future.
At 5-foot-7, 150-pounds, Smith does not have the prototypical size for a major college receiver. But he has some role models to look to for the recipe for success with speed and agility.
I always looked up to Derrick Williams when he was at Eleanor Roosevelt with me, Smith said. The coaches always told me to pattern myself after him, but they didn't even have to. I could tell on my own how he uses his ability and he has worked with me to make me the player that I am today. I am a big Derrick Williams fan. I have patterned myself after him in high school and I plan to do the same in college if I can.
Smith plans on taking his visits this fall, and if he keeps his track offers open as a possibility his recruitment could extend into the winter months. Stay tuned for more updates as Smith takes his visits this fall.
