Penn State's 45-3 win over over Temple at Beaver Stadium Saturday was the 376th of Paterno's career, which began in 1966. He had been tied with Florida State's Bobby Bowden at 375, but the Seminoles' 12-3 home loss to Wake Forest gave Paterno the outright lead.
It had been nearly five years since Bowden passed Paterno for the top spot. Ironically, Bowden took the lead in the race when FSU beat Wake Forest 48-24 Oct. 25, 2003, the same day Penn State lost at Iowa (26-14).
Alabama and Texas A&M legend Bear Bryant had been the all-time major college wins leader with 323 before Paterno passed him with a stunning 29-27 upset of Ohio State at Beaver Stadium Oct. 27, 2001.
Paterno coached the first half of Saturday's game from the sideline, watching his now 4-0 team build a 31-0 lead. But he spent the second half in the coaches' area of the press box, so he could keep weight off an injured right knee that had been bothering him for weeks.
