ILLINOIS: Report Card

See who made the grade and who came up short as we rate Penn State's win over the Illini.

OVERALL: A solid win, no doubt. But we don't think this was anywhere near the best game Penn State can deliver.
Grade: B+

OFFENSE: Would have given an “A” here if not for the fact that the Lions had two more fumbles, losing one. Thirteen in five games in ridiculous. Overall, though, nice job by Daryll Clark and crew.
Grade: B+

DEFENSE: That's some outstanding offensive talent PSU faced. After some early struggles because the players could not hear the pre-snap calls against a no-huddle offense, Tom Bradley's crew figured things out and held the Illini in check.
Grade: B+

SPECIAL TEAMS: Great job of containing Illinois' outstanding return game. Huge improvement from the Temple game.
Grade: B+

COACHING: Nice job by Joe Paterno and his staff, especially early when the Lions faced their first gut check of the season.
Grade: B+

INTANGIBLES: Yes, we're having some fun with the “B+” grades here. But it seemed like that kind of night for Penn State.
Grade: B+

OTHER GUY: Some unreal offensive talent. But it is tough to win against Top 25 comp with an inconsistent passing game and iffy defense.
Grade: C+

OFFICIALS: We're not sure we've ever seen back-to-back overturns on consecutive plays from the line of scrimmage. Kudos for getting them right in the end. Demerits for screwing them up in the first place
Grade: C-

CROWD: Was rocking and rolling from the start and kept at it even when PSU fell into an early hole.
Grade: A
