NITTANY NOTES: Participation Update

Get an exclusive update from Penn State's Wednesday practice session. Who was seeing action, who wasn't seeing action and who was back in action.

As it prepares for a road trip to Purdue, the Penn State football team is dealing with a series of issues and injuries which have impacted the participation of several players. Here is the latest:

Jordan Norwood: The receiver missed Wednesday's practice, allowing him to further recover from the hamstring injury he sustained a week earlier. Norwood not only missed Saturday's Illinois clash, but also the Monday and Tuesday practice sessions this week. This week he has been limited to light running.

"[The coaches] are just giving him time to fully recover," an observer explained. "There's really no reason to play Jordan [this week]. We need him 100 percent down the road, so I don't expect he'll see action this week [against Purdue] unless something significant changes with the depth or his situation."

Will he play? We expect Norwood to travel to Purdue and believe a decision on whether he will play will be made shortly before the game.

Navorro Bowman: After getting extra rest on Monday and Tuesday with limited reps, Wednesday the linebacker was back in action with some limitations.

"[He] was in the navy jersey with the white cross on it. The coaches know he's important to the success of the defense, and the plays — sacrificing his body ... they have a tough time reeling him in in drills and they want him fully rested. So they have limited his contact. He still got some hits in, but the coaches got on him for it," an observer explained.

Will he play? We expect Bowman to be full go come Saturday.

Lydell Sargeant: The defensive back missed practice Monday and Tuesday. We're told the absence was for personal reasons and not injury related. He was back Wednesday.

Will he play? We expect Sargeant to travel and believe he will handle a backup role at cornerback and perhaps play some nickel.

Tom McEowen: The defensive tackle sustained a shoulder injury in drills. The extent of the injury is not clear at this point. The training staff is expected to evaluate him further today.

Will he play? We don't have enough information to make a call on this one yet.
