Is PSU Still Recruiting TE?

Illinois tight-end Mike Steinhaus had previously listed Penn State as one of teams recruiting him. Have the Nittany Lions kept in touch?

Name: Mike Steinhaus
Position: TE
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 230 pounds
40-yard dash: 4.7
School: Dundee-Crown HS, Carpentersville, IL

"I had 40 catches for 533 yards and one touchdown," Mike said of his senior season.  "On defense, I had 104 tackles, 90 solo, 9 sacks, 4 fumble recoveries and 2 forced fumbles.

"I have official visits set up to UConn (1/24) and Eastern Michigan (1/11).  I'm waiting to hear back from the University of Central Florida and Western Michigan."

Although about 8 Division II schools have offered the tight-end prospect a scholarship, he does not yet have a Division I offer.

"I was told by Wisconsin and Illinois that I'm like the second person on their chart and if nobody else takes the offer they're going to give it to me."

He has not heard from either Big 10 team in about a month.  That was about the same time that Penn State last contacted him.

"They said they had the exact same kind of guy as me from Pennsylvania and they're going to give it to him because he's from Pennsylvania, but if he doesn't take it they're giving it to me.  That was about a month ago."

Up until that time, PSU Coach Ron Vanderlinden had been in regular contact with Mike.

"They probably called about every week."

Who is his current favorite?

"I would say UConn.  I like them a lot because they're joining the Big East in 2005 and they had a pretty good year this year.  They're an up and coming team because they just really started their program."
