"It was pretty hot out there today," according to one observer. "It didn't seem to faze a lot of the veterans, although some of the younger guys felt it. A couple freshmen were joking about if they had gone to school down South they'd probably have melted."
The players reported around 3:00 p.m. and were on the fields between Leach and Holuba by 3:30. It was a "light" day, just in helmets.
The squad spent the first 15 minutes on some position drill work with their units. The players then took their traditional warm-up jog around the field and stretched as a team.
The players then took in some individual and agility drills. Overall, the session lasted about 90 minutes.
Here are some notes of interest from the session:
- A lot of the veterans were "very vocal" with the younger players, telling them to "hustle up" and "not waste their valuable practice time."
- "A bunch of guys kept saying 'Friday, Friday, Friday,'" an observer said. "One coach got a bit heated and said 'What the hell is Friday? It's Monday — every practice counts. What's so important about Friday?'
The answer from a player: "Friday is full pads coach."
"The guys are already lobbying to get contact in on Friday," an observer explained. "The coach seemed to be OK with that answer."
- As for the freshmen, "I think several of them were a bit shell-shocked. I mean it was like mid-90s and it's all out. I think it was a bit tough on them, but they'll get better for it. Guys like [Daryll] Clark, [Jared] Odrick, [Stefen] Wisniewski and [Sean] Lee kept checking on the younger guys and pushing them."
