One Last Chance

These two prospects are hoping to achieve qualifying SAT scores this Saturday. Penn State has expressed interest in both. How interested is the Nittany Lion coaching staff?

Name: Carlin Gibson

Name: Ervin Battle
Position: RB, LB
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 227 pounds
40-yard dash: 4.5
School: Huguenot HS, Richmond, VA

Carlin played cornerback for Huguenot this season and had 10 interceptions heading into the playoffs.

According to his head coach, Richard McFee, Carlin has a few scholarship offers.

"Yeah, he has Michigan, Penn State and Tennessee, but everything is based on what he does on the SAT scores," McFee said Wednesday evening.  "He's got to get his test scores."

Gibson has been studying hard and will retake the SAT this Saturday in hopes of achieving a qualifying score.

Ervin played both fullback and linebacker for Huguenot.  He rushed for over 1,000 yards, averaging approximately 10 yards per carry.  Per McFee, Ervin does not yet have any scholarship offers.

"He's in the same boat with his SAT scores.  He's taking the test on Saturday also.  His father and I just finished meeting maybe a half hour ago and we are really leaning towards Ervin going to Fork Union."

Penn State has also talked to Coach McFee about Ervin.

"Syracuse, Michigan, Penn State, as a matter of fact, I think Bill Kenney is coming here tomorrow because we were going to set up his visit, but I'm not going to let him visit because of [not getting a qualifying SAT score].  My thing is why should they be afforded an opportunity of that nature when they haven't put forth the effort to earn that.  Academics come first and football is second.  In the years I've been here, after 15 years, we've sent a 150 kids to school on football scholarship and I've never let one visit that didn't have the grades and the test scores because that's a pipe dream and I don't like to give kids pipe dreams."

Neither player has taken any official visits.  It's unclear as to whether or not Bill Kenney would meet with both prospects.

"If possible, because tomorrow (Thursday) is the All-Metro Richmond Touchdown Club Banquet where they honor the high school football players.  Both of these kids made All-Metro, so they both have to be at the banquet at 6:00.  If Bill comes in, he's got to come in and do it quick."

Would Penn State take Carlin if he gets the score?

"I would think so."

Coach McFee is hoping to get the scores back within a week to 10 days.
