Monday Morning Fullback: Syracuse

See what former Nittany Lion Matt Hahn has to say about Penn State's win over the Orange at Beaver Stadium Saturday.

General Thoughts

Daryll Clark looked sharp throwing the ball. He hit multiple receivers spreading the ball around nicely. Evan Royster and Stephfon Green need to get going on the ground. I wouldn't mind seeing Brandon Beachum get in there and get some reps. I think he would bring a physicality to the backfield that would compliment Royster and Green nicely. Verdict on the secondary is still out for me; a lot of inexperience but lots of upside. Field goal kicking still a question mark for me as well.

Game MVP

The Penn State linebacker core. Sean Lee was all over the field again, doing a great job of setting the tone for the Penn State defense. I thought Josh Hull played a really solid game, finishing up with 11 tackles and an interception. I like the energy Nate Stupar brings to the game. He did a nice job filling in for Navarro Bowman.

Key Play

Daryll Clark's 49-yard scoring strike to Evan Royster. Even though we haven't seen the type of ground production we want to this season out of Royster, we are getting a glimpse of just how important he is to this football team. Running, receiving and punt returning, you'll be hard pressed to find another player in the Big Ten as versatile as he is. Being able to split Royster out is also important because now it allows the offense to bring in Green to get him a couple more touches a game and give the big-play threat some more opportunity.

What I Liked

Defense, defense, defense! Lots of speed, lots of depth. They will be tough all year.

What I Didn't Like

Penn State's inability to run the football for the second straight week. Yes, the running game needs to improve. I think that is obvious, because 78 rushing yards is not going to cut it, especially when Big Ten play starts. But I have a feeling the line is going to click sooner rather than later. The offensive line as a whole seems to be getting on its blocks. It's sustaining the blocks that seems to be the area of weakness. Improvement with that comes in time. Rome wasn't built in a day and with losing three offensive linemen -- all of them All-Big Ten picks -- a newly formed offensive line is going to have its growing pains. I think the run game gets it going next week.

Did You Notice?

Two things this week: No. 1, did you catch Joe Paterno giving that camera man an ear full during pre-game stretch? I felt bad for that guy. Coach Paterno was chewing that guy out like a player blowing an assignment. No. 2: Josh Hull's mustache is awesome!

General Thoughts

This week against Temple is another opportunity to get some young talent game experience.
