Penn State kicked off, and Indiana began with a well executed drive deep into Nittany Lion territory. A controversial reception at the 12 yard line fired up the Penn State defense who responded by stopping the Hoosiers on 3 straight plays, setting up an Indiana field goal.
Indiana 3, Penn State 0
On the ensuing Penn State drive, following a couple of first downs, a Clark rollout pass was tipped and intercepted at midfield by the Hoosiers. Indiana converted a 4th and one, and then completed a 27 yard pass for a touchdown.
Indiana 10, Penn State 0
Assisted by a pair of Clark runs on third downs, the Lions drove to the Indiana 20 on their next posession, but Clark tossed his second interception of the quarter, and Indiana took over on their own 10 yard line. The defense held Indiana to a 3 and out, and the Hoosiers. Asterino fumbled the return, and Indiana recovered at the 29.
The Penn State defense stopped the Hoosiers at midfield, and Zug received the punt, but was tackled at the Penn State 7. Unable to cross the 30, the Lions were forced to kick to Indiana, and an excellent punt gave the Hoosiers a posession at their 20. Indiana was stopped, and Zug fumbled and recovered the punt. Penn State was aided by a 15 yard penalty against Indiana for interference with the opportunity to catch the punt.
A Royster carry and reception helped the Lions to drive to the Indiana 20. The drive stalled at the Hoosier 15, and Wagner booted a field goal to open scoring for the Penn State.
Indiana 10, Penn State 3
Penn State's line drive kickoff went into the endzone for a touchback, and Indiana took over at the 20. The Lions forced a 3 and out, and the Hoosiers punted to Penn State with 2 minutes remaining in the half. Zug fumbled the catch again, and this time Indiana recovered at the Penn State 30. Indiana could not move the ball. The Hoosiers attempted a 47 yard field goal, which sailed wide right, and the Lions took over on downs.
A big play by Curtis Drake, assisted by a face mask penalty against the Hoosiers set up Penn State at the Indiana 13. Clark completed a screen to Royster to finish the drive, and the Lions tied up the game.
Penn State 10, Indiana 10
Following the ensuing kickoff, the first half ended with no further scoring.
Another fumble on the kickoff return had Nittany Lion fans fuming, but Penn State recovered. Brandon Beachum was lost on the play with an apparent knee injury. The Lions drove to the 20, but a delay of game penalty stifled the drive. Wagner's field goal attempt hit the upright and fell back, and the score remained tied.
Indiana drove to the Penn State 30, where Navarro Bowman made the highlight reels with a 73 yard pick six to give the Lions their first lead of the day.
Penn State 17, Indiana 10
The Nittany Lions forced a 3 and out after the kickoff, and this time Zug fair caught the Indiana punt. Penn State drove the ball, and ended the quarter third and goal at the 3 yard line.
On the first play of the quarter, Royster got into the end zone, and Penn State extended their lead.
Penn State 24, Indiana 10
Following the kick, Indiana drove, but was bottled up at the Penn State 23. The field goal attempt was good, ending the Lions stretch of 24 unanswered points.
Penn State 24, Indiana 13
A solid dose of Royster, a big pass to Drake, and a mix of short passes brought the Lions down the field. Clark finished the drive with a 1 yard quarterback sneak to extend the Lion lead.
Penn State 31, Indiana 13
Indiana moved down the field against the Penn State soft zone defense. Sean Lee picked off Chappell, the IU quarterback at the goal line, but the interception was negated by a personal foul facemask on Latham. Indiana scored on the next play to narrow the margin.
Penn State 31, Indiana 20
Shuler recovered Indiana's onside kick with just over a minute remaining. A quick 3 and out followed, and Penn State was forced to punt. Boone's punt was downed at the Indiana 1 yard line with 40 seconds remaining. Indiana advanced to the 20, where their drive stalled, and a short punt gave the ball back to the Lions at midfield. Clark took a knee to finish out the game.
