EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Penn State beat Michigan State 42-14 here Saturday, improving to 10-2 overall and 6-2 in the Big Ten.

The Spartans, meanwhile, slipped to 6-6 and 4-4.

Here is our report card from the game that was:

OVERALL: Say what you will about the ugly first half, but Penn State really turned it on in the final 30 minutes. Everyone who predicted a 28-point win, please raise your hand.
Grade: B+

OFFENSE: The Nittany Lions finished with 512 yards, 24 first downs and averaged 7.8 yards per play.
Grade: B+

DEFENSE: Solid effort in holding a good offensive team to a couple of touchdowns, one of them in garbage time.
Grade: A-

SPECIAL TEAMS: Pretty good work overall. But those two missed field goals when the game was tight were troubling.
Grade: C+

COACHING: The offensive staff made some nice adjustment after the Spartans had early success with the blitz.
Grade: B

INTANGIBLES: The Lions showed much more enthusiasm than they had the previous two weeks. Good effort.
Grade: B

OTHER GUY: We've seen MSU fold at Beaver Stadium before, but this was the first collapse against the Lions in East Lansing.
Grade: D

OFFICIALS: Zebras seemed to get all of the important stuff right.
Grade: B

CROWD: A late-arriving group that began heading for the exits midway through the third quarter.
Grade: C-
