FOS goes straight to program observers to get their reactions to the announcement that true freshman Robert Bolden has been named Penn State's starting quarterback.

Robert Bolden is the first true freshman to earn the starting quarterback job heading into a season in Penn State coach Joe Paterno's 45 years at the helm of the program.

Bolden enrolled at PSU in July. He will be under center when the Nittany Lion offense takes the field against Youngstown State at Beaver Stadium Saturday.

"I think it's fantastic; it was a legitimate position battle and Rob came in as shell-shocked everyone," one observer said. "(Former starter) Daryll Clark was praising this guy last year and said he would compete, but I doubt he thought this would happen. But he'll tell you otherwise (laughing)."

"I admit I didn't think Joe would bless it, but I know there was a ton of lobbying to get this," another observer explained. "We'll see how it goes, but Bolden will need some to have some patience from everyone. He's going to make rookie mistakes, but he's also shown he fixes them quickly."

According to yet another observer, "I don't think there was any other choice — people will say it was close, but Bolden is hands-down the best choice in my view. He gives different looks and options. Put him out there and let him learn and work his magic."

As another observer said of the pick, "Love it. Go out with a bang, Joe." polled a several observers immediately after the announcement to get their reaction to the selection. Here are the results:
