OFFENSE: Yes, there were some obvious highlights, led by rookie QB Robert Bolden and senior wideout Brett Brackett. But the O-line struggled early, Evan Royster looked a bit sluggish (perhaps because of that line) and State's longest gain from scrimmage was 27 yards.
DEFENSE: The Lions were burned for an early 80-yard score and failed to cause a turnover. The tackling was dicey at times, too. That's not good enough against this type of opponent, even if PSU kept things very vanilla most of the day. Having said all that, nice starting debut by MLB Chris Colasanti (career-high 13 tackles).
COACHING: Most of this stems from the staff getting Bolden so well-prepared for the opener.
INTANGIBLES: We liked the vide around the new QB. And the Lions stepped on the gas pedal when they had to.
OTHER GUY: A new coach. A roster that had been overhauled. You have to respect a FCS team for taking on one of the big boys and fighting until the very end. A paycheck well-earned by the Penguins.
OFFICIALS: We know the YSU sideline was griping over the Penguins being flagged eight times for 65 yards. Seemed like the zebras were on their game in this one, though.
CROWD: Way too many empty seats for a season-opener, regardless of the opponent.
