Coates Talks Recruiting

Pitt was the first to offer 5-11, 170-pound corner Marchez Coates. He talks about where the Panthers stand.

Since his offer from Pittsburgh at their camp last month, Marchez Coates has added another offer from Eastern Michigan. Coates has stayed in contact with the Pitt coaching staff, and at this point, it might not be too long before he makes a decision.

"I actually talked to (defensive backs) coach (Tony) Gibson, on Thursday," Coates said. "It was a pretty good conversation. He was saying how he wants me to come back. I like Pitt a lot. They're my number-one school for now. I plan to go up there, not this weekend, but the week after."

Todd Graham has often talked, since being hired in January, about being relationships. That philosophy has carried over to recruits like Coates, who are simply interested in just building the relationship.

"I'm just building a relationship with the coaches to see if I get a good vibe or a bad vibe," Coates said. "I want to see how I could fit in their program, and to see everything they can do to help me. My big goal is to go to the NFL and be the number-one DB to ever play the game. I want to know how they can prepare me to get to that point. I'm looking forward to that."

Coates has had a busy summer with a lot of 7-on-7s and a lot of prospect camps. That schedule will wind down soon with one more camp. After that, Coates says he's looking forward to making a decision.

"I'm done with camps, Virginia is the only camp I'm going to after this," Coates added. "I went to about 35 camps this summer, it seems. I worked hard. I'm probably going to commit at the beginning of the season; the first game or maybe the third game. Pitt is my number-one school. I've been going to their camps since my freshman year. I've loved it since then. I'm probably 85 percent with Pitt right now."
