NEWPORT, R.I. – The University of Pittsburgh football team has been selected to finish second in the Big East's annual preseason media poll released Tuesday, as part of the conference's summer kickoff at the Viking Hotel.
Pitt received 162 points, including two first-place votes, out of a possible 24. West Virginia led all schools with 188 overall points and 21 first-place votes. USF was the only other school to receive a first-place vote, finishing third in the poll with 151 total points and one first-place vote. Pitt returns 13 starters from last season's 8-5 squad that earned a 27-10 victory over Kentucky in the BBVA Compass Bowl.
Highlighting the Panthers' returnees and representing Pitt at Big East media days are Myles Caragein (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks), Jarred Holley (Easton, Pa./Easton Area), Brandon Lindsey (Aliquippa, Pa./Aliquippa) and Mike Shanahan (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin). Pitt opens the 2011 season on Sept. 3 against Buffalo at 6 p.m. at Heinz Field.
