SHENZHEN, China—Pitt guard Ashton Gibbs scored 13 points and added a game-high three assists to help the USA Men's Team register a 124-64 win over Finland Wednesday at Universiade Main Gym. Undefeated in the World University Games with a 4-0 record, Gibbs and Team USA will face Israel (2-2) on Thursday.
The Americans have won each of their first four games by 41 or more points and have outscored their opponents 446-252. Four teams—Team USA, Germany, Lithuania and Russia—all have perfect 4-0 records.
Gibbs, who started at point guard against Finland, converted 5-8 total field goal attempts, 3-4 free-throws and finished with three assists in 18 minutes of action. He was one of five USA players who reached double figure scoring including Alabama's JaMychal Green, who scored a game-high 21 points.
Finland (2-2) kept it close in the first quarter, taking the lead from USA three times in the first four minutes, but the Americans rallied and built a 25 point halftime lead (63-38). USA outscored Finland 37-13 in the third quarter to put the game away. Finland was held to 37.1 percent (26-70) shooting from the floor.
Through four games and three starts, Gibbs leads Team USA in scoring (13.5 ppg.), minutes played (20.3 mpg.) and assists (3.5 apg.). He is also shooting 57.1 percent (20-35) from the floor and 42.9 percent (3-7) from 3-point range, pulling down 2.8 rebounds per contest and owns a team-best 2.80 assist:turnover ratio.
