SHENZHEN, China—Pitt guard Ashton Gibbs scored 11 points, including a game-high three assists to help the USA Men's Team claim an 86-83 win over Germany on Monday at Universiade Main Gym. With the win, USA finishes in fifth place with and also ties for the tournament's best record at 7-1.
Gibbs, who made his fifth start in eight games against Germany, converted 4-9 field goals and played a team-high 27 minutes. The Americans trailed 41-40 at halftime. Using a 28-12 points-in-the-paint advantage and a 19-8 rebound advantage in the second half, the USA managed to outwork the Germans in earning a hard-fought win.
On Sunday, USA defeated Romania 94-73. Ashton Gibbs contributed four points off the bench.
Team USA was eliminated from medal play by Lithuania, 76-74, on Saturday. Gibbs started at point guard and scored 16 points, including a 6-6 effort from the free throw line. The Americans were outrebounded for the only time in the tournament (43-37), shot a dismal 34.3 percent from the field (23-67), and 16.7 percent from 3-point range (5-30), including 0-14 in the second half.
In eight World University Games contests, Gibbs averaged a team-high 21.8 minutes played, 11.6 points per game, 46.6 field goal pct. (34-73), 95.0 free throw pct. (19-20) and a team-high 2.3 assists per game.
