Charlie Jones, 19 Offers and Still Counting

Rumor has it that some college scouts think that Charlie Jones is the best running back in the state. The 5-foot-10 and 200 pound bruiser, who is from Homestead (Fla.) South Dade, doesn't disagree.

When asked what effect does highly recruited running back Bobby Washington's decision to attend the University of Miami, Jones had this to say:

"It doesn't matter because I think I'm the better guy," Jones, who rushed for over 1,500 yards and 19 touchdowns as a junior, said.

Right now, at least 19 colleges think he's a pretty good running back also.

"I have 19 offers," he said. "Miami, Florida, Florida State and Notre Dame have verbally offered me now. Some of my written ones are from Ohio State, Rutgers, Tennessee, LSU, Boston College, Iowa and Pittsburgh."

Right now Jones likes Miami, Florida, Notre Dame, North Carolina State and Ohio State best. He also has some interest in Florida State and Pittsburgh.

What makes the South Dade running back so special?

"My style resembles Ricky Williams," he said. "I can run around you and I can run through you. I'm an all-around back."

After watching his highlight tape, the Pitt Insiders doesn't disagree. Jones is a compact back that has a lot of power. His strength and vision makes him a top RB recruit that will be sought after by many teams. In this writer's opinion, he might be the top back in the state. He most certainly is one of the top backs in the Southeast for the class of 2004.
