Chryst Announces Personnel Decisions

Juantez Hollins will be suspended for the 2012 season, incoming freshman Chris Davis for the first week and quarterback Mark Myers will transfer.

Three days prior to the start of his first training camp, Paul Chryst announced three personnel matters; two suspensions and a transfer.

The most prominent announcement, because of the position it involves, is that of Mark Myers transferring. Myers appeared in four games last season in a reserve role. He was given two opportunities to lay claim to the backup role at quarterback. Last August, he was surpassed by walk-on Trey Anderson--who would go on to earn a scholarship in training camp.

Myers started off this past spring taking a significant number of first-team reps. As the spring wore on, however, incumbent starter Tino Sunseri took back many first-team reps. By the end of spring, it was clear that Sunseri was the No. 1 quarterback for Chryst. Myers was expected to be in competition for the backup spot. That battle will now be between Trey Anderson and incoming freshman Chad Voytik.

A move including a starter, was that of left tackle Juantez Hollins being suspended for the entire 2012 season, due to a violation of team rules. Hollins started seven games last year, and was expected to hold on to his starting left tackle job based on the majority of snaps he took with the first team during the spring. That job, now, will be up for grabs, and it's not as if Pitt has many options. Chris Jacobson and Ryan Turnley appear to be safe bets at left guard and center, respectively. As to who can wrap up the right guard, right tackle and now left tackle jobs, is anyone's guess. Pitt at least has some starting experience between Ryan Schlieper, Cory King and Matt Rotheram, who started eight, five and two games last year.

The right guard and right tackle spots will go to two of those players. For the one who loses out, can he switch to left tackle? And, If not, can you move Zenel Demhasaj, Tom Ricketts or even a Justin Virbitsky in there? That, all of a sudden, becomes a battle to watch for in camp--a very big one.

Incoming freshman receiver Chris Davis was suspended for the first week of training camp, due to disciplinary reasons. He will rejoin the team on August 12.
