Panthers Get A No. 8 Seed

In the end, RPI may have prevented Pitt from getting a higher seed. Panthers get a No. 8 seed for the first time since 1989.

Pitt earned its 24th NCAA Tournament appearance on Sunday, announced as the No. 8 seed in the West Region. The Panthers will play No. 9 seed Wichita State on Thursday in Salt Lake City.

A win Thursday sets up a matchup with the winner of No. 1 seed Gonzaga and No. 16 Southern.

Pitt last played as a No. 8 in 1989, when they were eliminated by a Rick Majerus coached Ball State team, 68-64, in Indianaplois. Pitt played as a No. 9 seed, losing to Pacific in 2005.

Pitt's most recent RPI is 43, which likely played the biggest factor in Pitt's seeding. Wichita State, 26-7, has a 37 ranking in RPI.
