Pittsburgh—The University of Pittsburgh basketball program signed Jamel Artis (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep, Mass.)—to a National Letter of Intent, head coach Jamie Dixon announced on Friday. Artis joins fall signees Josh Newkirk (Raleigh, N.C./Word of God Christian Academy) and Michael Young (McKeesport, Pa./St. Benedict's Prep, N.J.) as Pitt's three-member signing class of 2013. The NCAA Division I spring men's basketball signing period began Wednesday, April 17 and concludes on Wednesday, April 24.
Artis, a 6-foot-seven-inch combination forward, averaged 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists per game at Notre Dame Prep (Mass.) during the 2012-13 season. He earned All New England Prep School Athletic Conference honors and was a Second Team Class 2A All-State selection after guiding Notre Dame Prep to the National Prep Championship semifinals. Artis has been described as a tough, versatile performer who can rebound and create matchup problems.
Pitt concluded the 2012-13 season with a 24-9 record and advanced to its 11th NCAA Tournament in the last 12 seasons. Pitt also finished in fourth place in its final season in the Big East Conference. The Panthers enter Atlantic Coast Conference competition in 2013-14.
A combination point forward, Jamel Artis is a tough, versatile perimeter performer, who can play multiple positions and inside or outside. Artis has also been described as a rugged playmaking big man who can put the ball on the floor or bang down low. His talent is limitless and his best attributes are his basketball IQ, ball handling ability, toughness and his ability to understand the game at a high level. When his motor is running high, he is a good rebounder who can make things happen off the dribble and can compete against bigger and more physical and athletic competition. On the offensive end, Artis can handle the ball, has size and floor vision and attacks the basket. Artis is a matchup problem on the offensive end of the court because he has the strength to overpower less physically mature wing forwards and the ability to step out and knock down jumpers. For his size, he can also handle the ball, get to the rim and make plays with his passing ability. Defensively, he anticipates passes in the passing lanes and competes hard on both ends of the floor. A fearless rebounder, Artis is a hard hat and lunch pail type of player.
