Nicholson, McKenzie Heading To The Opening

Four-star WPIAL prospects Montae Nicholson and Shai McKenzie will represent Western Pennsylvania at next month's select combine in Oregon.

Monroeville (PA) Gateway safety Montae Nicholson and Washington (PA) running back Shai McKenzie are heading to The Opening next month, after a successful performance at the Nike Football Training Camp on Sunday.

Both players worked out on the offensive side of the ball. Though Nicholson came to work out with the defensive backs, he took home Wide Receiver MVP honors, to earn his golden ticket to the event.

The Opening is held at the Nike World Headquarters in Oregon, and consists of the top performers at several of the regional Nike Football Training Camps.

McKenzie was a walk-up participant on Sunday, and was runner-up for the Running Back MVP Award that was given to Tennessee commit Jalen Hurd, also a four-star prospect.

These latest accolades for Nicholson and McKenzie come at a busy stretch in their recruiting process. Nicholson is making his rounds, possibly nearing a decision. Last weekend, Nicholson earned a Gold Medal at the PIAA state track championship, as part of the 4x100 relay team.

McKenzie also placed at the event, throwing the shotput, taking home fifth place with a throw of 53 feet, 1 inch.

The Northwest is not the only region of the country McKenzie will see this spring. Later this week, he will head south to take unofficial visits to Georgia, Georgia Tech and Florida State.
