Pitt upset by Toledo 35-31

The Pitt defense couldn't stop the Toledo spread offense all night and that was the difference in the football game. Pitt joined the ranks of #6 Kansas State and Alabama who were also upset by MAC teams Saturday.

Toledo QB Brad Gradkowski played an unbelievable game as he torched the Panthers defense all night. He finished 49 of 62 for 470 yards and 3 TD's. His leading receivers were Lance Moore and Steve Odom. Moore finished with 15 catches for 163 yards and two TD's. Odom had 11 catches for 135 yards. Toledo's spread offense played a near perfect game and the Panther defense had no answers for them all night. Toledo had 5 receivers with at least 5 catches on the evening.

Pitt's offense had another strong outing but two costly interceptions hurt the team when they were close to putting the game on ice. Rod Rutherford finished 24 of 36 for 315 yards and 4 TD's. He threw two interceptions, the last of which came as the Panthers had a 10-point lead and were driving to put the game out of reach. Larry Fitzgerald had another outstanding game as he finished with 12 catches for 201 yards and one TD.

Pitt's offensive line was playing without two starters, Justin Belarski and Dan LaCarte. Replacement starter at guard, Matt Maiers suffered a knee injury and he may be out for the season.

Next up, the Panthers play at Texas A&M (2-1) Saturday. They lost to Virginia Tech 35-19 Thursday night.
