Panthers expected to land top Florida LB

One of the top players in Florida is expected to verbal to Pittsburgh, maybe as soon as Monday.

Vernon Smith, a 6'1" 230 linebacker from Ft. Lauderdale (Dillard) has only officially visited Pittsburgh after a scheduled trip to Mississippi State was cancelled due to the taking of his SAT's. He also took an unofficial trip to South Florida, who now is his second favorite.

"I'm thinking of calling the Pittsburgh coaches tomorrow and telling them I am coming," says Smith, who is being recruited as a MLB.

Smith, who took his visit to Pittsburgh on Jan. 9, says he liked what he saw, despite the cold.

"I would rate my trip a nine. I am not used to the cold but I will be able to get used to it."

Smith took the SAT's last weekend and has said that Pittsburgh will still sign him before the results of the test are known.

His teammate at Dillard, WR Kelvin Chandler, will join Smith as a Panther.
