Panthers offer another DC/MD player

One of the biggest gripes fans had about the University of Pittsburgh's recruiting efforts was the lack of focus on the Washington, DC/Maryland Metro area. Well, if Pittsburgh fails this season it certainly won't be for lack of effort. Coach Walt Harris has offered a third scholarship to a player from this region.

Earlier last week Dunbar's James Mcdonald and Kevin Wiggins were offered. Now it is St. Johns College High School LB Rico McCoy 6-2/210, 4.51, 325 bench, 34" vertical.

Rico has already received offers from Syracuse and Maryland. He had over 120 tackles and 5 sacks in 2003 and was named 1st Team All-Metro and 1st Team All-League.

I had the pleasure of interviewing the very likeable Rico McCoy and here's what he had to say.

What schools besides the ones that have offered are showing interest in you?

"Miami, Florida, Michigan, Ohio State, and Virginia."

Which schools are you interested in right now?

"Miami, Syracuse, Maryland, and Pitt."

What do these schools have that interests you?

"Miami - they always win, Syracuse - my brother Reggie is a freshman defensive back there, Pitt - I like the city, Maryland - I think about playing in front of the hometown crowd and against Virginia Tech, the ACC is going to be tough."

Will you attend any camps or combines?

"I plan on going to camp at Miami. I am going to Florida, Maryland and Virginia's junior days, and I would also like to visit Pittsburgh."

"Actually I was a big Penn State fan."

Who do you try and pattern your game after?

" I like Ray Lewis and LaVar Arrington, they are both very physical, smart, just the complete package."

So, are you a physical player?

"Oh yeah, I am very aggressive; I look at every hit like it's going to be a knockout."

What are the biggest things you want to find in a University?

A good relationship with the coaches, the atmosphere, and a solid academic tutoring program."
