Colleges lining up for Ohio speedster

2003 was considered by many to be a down year for recruits in Ohio. It doesn't appear that this year will be a repeat performance. Ohio has depth at every position.

At wide receiver, one of the top prospects is 6-3, 180 4.4 Brian Hartline, Glenoak High School. Brian has been contacted by almost every team in the Big East and Big Ten, along with Stanford, and Kentucky.
Glenoak is coached by Jack Rose who had this to say about his star protégé.

"Brian can play any position on the field, he has great hands, and breakaway speed."

"He actually started out as our QB until his brother Mike took over, allowing us to use Brian as a WR."

Hartline benches 220 lbs., squats 240 lbs., has a 33" vertical, and possesses a 3.9 GPA.

PittInsider caught up with Hartline recently.

If you were to name 5 favorites right now who would they be?

"Ohio State-High, Michigan State-Medium, Pittsburgh-Medium, Penn State-Medium, and Virginia- Medium."

Which programs' junior days will you be attending?

" I recently attended Ohio States on Feb 7th, and Michigan State's on the 14th as well."

Do you have a favorite?

"Well, most Ohio kids love Ohio State, and I would like to go there, but I am not putting all my eggs in one basket."

"I guess I really don't have a true favorite, I am going to look at all my options."

Do you have plans for summer camps?

"I'm going to Ohio State in April, maybe Iowa and Penn State, I'm not really sure as of now."

How did your trip to Michigan State go?

" Actually, I did like the program but they didn't really do much to set themselves apart from anyone else."

Do you try to emulate any NFL or NCAA players?

"I grew up as a Dallas Cowboy fan so I would say Michael Irvin and Alvin Harper."

Brian was quick to add, "I only pattern my game after them, not my off the field behavior."

I've heard Coach Rose's take on Brian Hartline, how about yours?

"I am aggressive; I am not selfish; I like to block; I have enough speed to get past db's."

What other sports do you participate in?

"Indoor track, I do the 55 meter hurdles, high jump, and 4x400 meter relay."

"Outdoor track, I do the 110 and 300 hurdles, the high jump and the 4x400 relay."

Do you have a timeline as to when you may decide?

"I may decide early, I am not totally positive though."

I have to ask, if you commit early, do you plan on keeping your verbal?

"It's funny that you ask, me and my mom have this discussion a lot. and she has made me realize what it means to give your word to someone. So I would honor my verbal."

What else should we know about Brian Hartline?

"I give everything a chance. I have tried karate, gymnastics, I'm not afraid to try things."

"I believe I can line up against anyone and beat them, I am confident on the field, but ultimately the proof is in the pudding."

Any last words Brian?

"If people think I am a blue chipper, wait until you see my brother Mike. He is a sophomore QB; he's 6-4, 180 right now. He will be the man."
