Mitchum isn't the only star from Erie McDowell

Erie McDowell was a very busy place for college recruiters last fall. The target of all the attention was blue chip OL Kyle Mitchum.

As recuiters watched Mitchum, they couldn't help but take notice of RB/SS Jayson White, 6-1, 215, 4.5, and his 1,000-yard rushing season. White however, is being recruited as a strong safety. This year will be his first year at the position for coach Jon Cacchione and the McDowell team.
Coach Cacchione says, " White will pass anyone's eyeball test. The kid is a specimen."

Jayson White is attracting interest from Iowa, West Virginia, Ohio State, Syracuse, Michigan State, and Pittsburgh.

Erie McDowell's boosters have actually hired 2 strength coaches, and White and the other players are already reaping the benefits. He bench presses 400 pounds and squats 500, and can vertical jump 37".

Jayson's favorites right now are Pittsburgh, Syracuse, West Virginia, Ohio State, Iowa, and Michigan State.

PittInsider caught up with Jayson recently, here is the interview.

We have obviously established the fact that you are a specimen. How about grades?

"I have a 2.8 GPA and I am taking my boards in March."

Where do you plan on camping?

"I'm going to the Metro-Index camp, Penn State Nike camp, and some other things, but I'm not totally sure yet."

What are you looking for from a university?

"The football programs, weight rooms, education, and how the coaches treat the players."

What type of honors did you earn this year?

"1st Team All-Allegheny, 1st Team All-Metro, and I was invited to the US Army All-Star Jr. Combine."

Coach Cacchione said that the boosters hired the strength coaches, how has that gone?

"They do well, we do different phases every four weeks. Right now I work out 6 days a week."

What are your goals for the 2004 season?

"I am being recruited for defense, so I want to excel on that side of the ball. I just want to turn some heads."

Who did you grow up watching?

"I always liked Florida State. My mom loves Notre Dame because of Rudy."

Will distance factor into your decision?

"No, not at all; my parent are going to move to Florida so it makes no difference."

Coach says you're a track guy also.

"Yes, I do the sprints and throw shot put, indoor and outdoor."

Who will you visit?

"I am going to check out some ACC schools, some Big Ten schools, Pittsburgh, and Syracuse."

When are you going to make a decision?

"After the season is over."

How do you play the game?

"I am a throwback, a smash mouth guy, I use my speed and power to go through people. I am hard-nosed."

Tell me something else about you?

"I play string bass in an orchestra, and I just love to lift weights."

What will you major in?

"Maybe something in the medical field or health and Phys Ed."
