Stepping out of Shipley's shadow

2003 Penn State recruit AQ Shipley got most of the attention at Moon Area High School this season. Shipley is moving on and now the attention will be focused on another lineman at the WPIAL Class AAA School, OT John Bachman 6-4, 250, 5.1.

Moon is a member of the very competitive Parkway Conference. Bachman was named to the All-Conference Team as a sophomore and as a junior on offense and defense. He was also named to the All-WPIAL 1st team as an offensive lineman, and a 2nd Team AP All-State Class AAA selection.

John is receiving interest from Pittsburgh, Penn State, Michigan, Michigan State, Syracuse, Virginia, West Virginia, Iowa, and Wisconsin.

Pitt Insider interview with OT John Bachman

Which teams are you favoring right now?

"My three favorites are Penn State, Pittsburgh, and Michigan, followed closely by Iowa and Virginia."

Which junior days are you going to be attending?

"I am going to Michigan next weekend and Pittsburgh March 6th."

Are you planning on attending any camps?

"I am going to the Nike camp at Penn State March 15th, Joe Butler's Metro-Index camp, and possibly Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Purdue, Penn State, Pittsburgh, and Virginia camps, but I am not 100% sure right now."

Coach Capuano says you are a very technically sound lineman, but you need to get bigger, how are you doing that?

"I am lifting right now, concentrating on football, I am going to be lifting with AQ. I used to play basketball but I gave it up to concentrate on my goal of playing college football.

What is your max weight now?

"My max bench is 315 and squat is 435."

How would you describe your playing style?

"I go non-stop to the whistle, I am a very aggressive player, I always want to be in the play."

When will you decide?

"When it feels right to me."

What do you do when you're not lifting or playing football?

"Me and my father David like to go hiking together. He played at Colgate so he has been a big help for me as I go through this recruiting process."

Are you looking at staying close to home?

"If I had a choice I would, but I'll go wherever I have to go."

John participated in the US Army All American junior combine and did rather well. His combine stats were very comparable with the rest of the offensive lineman who were in attendance.
