Pitt recruit helps Aliquippa win WPIAL AA title

The WPIAL Class AA final was played Saturday evening at the AJ Palumbo Center at Duquesne University in front of a packed house. The crowd featured Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher, University of Pittsburgh QB Rod Rutherford, and Pittsburgh basketball player Jaron Brown.

The game featured the 21-4 Aliquippa Fighting Quips and the 22-4 Beaver Falls Tigers. 6-1 PG Darrelle Revis, who has signed on to play football for the University of Pittsburgh, led Aliquippa; he will also be a preferred walk-on for the Panther basketball team. Beaver Falls featured up and coming sophomore sensation 6-2 Lance Jeter. Beaver Falls head coach Doug Diega has his own Pittsburgh ties, as his future brother in-law is former Pittsburgh basketball player Marlin Ferguson.

Beaver Falls controlled the tempo throughout the 1st half playing a box in one and holding Revis to 4 points. Frustration got the best of Revis as he picked up his 3rd foul with 3:32 to go in the opening half. Revis did steal a pass and throw down a two handed dunk that had the crowd on their feet.

Aliquippa coach Marvin Emerson in his first season replacing the legendary Mike Zmijanic fired the troops up at half time. The Quips came out on fire and overcame an 8-point half time deficit to forge a 47-47 tie at 3:13 into the 3rd period. Revis then hit a running jumper to give Aliquippa it's first lead of the night 49-47 and the Quips never looked back. Dante Rawlins tossed a 25-foot lob pass to Revis that somehow found it's way into the hoop for a trifecta. Beaver Falls then went on a 2 for 14 shooting slump at the end of the 3rd period and Aliquippa capitalized, building its own 8 point lead.

Beaver Falls' shooting woes continued as they went 5-26 from the final minutes of the third period and the whole fourth period. Revis finished with 10 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 steals. Jance Henry led the Quips and his 20-point effort carried Aliquippa to a 70-64 victory and their 2nd consecutive WPIAL Class AA title. Both teams will advance to the PIAA playoffs with Aliquippa 22-4 taking on District 6 third place team Ligonier Valley at a site and time TBA. Beaver Falls 22-5 will take on District 5 representative Conemaugh Township at a sit and time TBA.
